Yellowtail kingfish caught while fishing the inshore reefs just North of Batemans Bay. This Kingfish was caught on a 10kg line with a 3/0 hook using a 6-10kg rod. Legal length for kingfish in New South Wales is 60cm. This one went just over 64cms.
The yellowtail kingfish is a game fish that is accessible to many recreational anglers. Catching a large Kingfish - especially from rocks - is regarded as an achievement by most experienced anglers. For those inexperienced or casual anglers who get lucky enough to land one, it remains a most memorable highlight of their fishing experiences.
Baits - use live squid, yellowtail, pike, sweep, garfish, small salmon, tommy ruff etc. or fresh kills of these fish. If you are using dead baits, pieces sliced of the side seem to give better results.
This fish is not a top-rate table fish, though the smaller fish of up to 6 kilos are palatable, provided they have been killed, bled, cleaned and kept out of the sun. Steaks from large specimens are considered satisfactory when barbecued.
